Performing facelift surgery is an art. Just as an artist would use various strokes, colors, and textures to create a signature masterpiece, so too must the surgeon use a variety of techniques to create the best possible results. As a surgeon, performing facelift surgery gives me a great sense of accomplishment.

About the Procedure
A facelift (rhytidectomy) is designed to smooth and firm the skin of the lower face and the neck, providing a fresh, youthful appearance. Throughout one’s life, the sun’s radiation, stress, gravity, and atrophy and other factors cause the skin to sag. Areas of the face and neck, particularly around the jaw line, are especially prone to aging. Though these changes are gradual, wrinkles and other signs of aging can make individuals feel and look older than they really are.
Facelift surgery involves tightening and realigning facial and neck skin, and in some instances, removing excess fat deposits. Although the term “facelift” suggests that the entire face is lifted, a facelift primarily addresses lower face, including the neck and jaw line. Therefore, a facelift is often performed in combination with other facial cosmetic procedures like brow lift or eyelid lift for more complete benefits. Dr. Virden performs facelift on people of varying ages who are troubled by signs of aging. However, patients are generally in their 40s or older when they undergo a face lift at his Reno or Lake Tahoe practice.
Reasons for Considering Facelift
- Sagging skin, muscles, and fat in the face and neck
- Excess skin and fat on the neck
- Sagging skin around the jaw line
- Crease lines along the nose, mouth, and chin
Dr. Virden’s Facelift Procedure
In Reno, a facelift with Dr. Virden commonly involves small incisions made just inside the hairline that follow the contour in front of the ear and continue under the earlobe to the backside of the ear and to the lower scalp. Tissue and fat deposits are separated, the skin is separated and tightened, and any excess skin is removed. If the neck line requires attention, an additional incision is made under the chin and the same procedure is again followed. Minuscule stitches are used to close the incisions and to reduce any chance of scarring
Newer techniques have emerged that improve the longevity of the procedure while minimizing downtime. The key to a long-lasting facelift result is tightening the dense tissue covering the underlying muscles, known as the SMAS (superficial musculoaponeurotic system). The majority of facelifts performed by non-plastic surgeons only tighten the skin or use barbed sutures. These types of facelifts go by the name of “J” lifts or “S” lifts and they do not last. Dr. Virden performs the high SMAS technique usually performed only by extremely experienced surgeons.
Face lifting is an art form that should only be performed by a board-certified plastic surgeon in Reno like Dr. Virden. The artistry of facelift surgery begins with the design of the incisions relative to the individual’s face, a complete knowledge of the anatomy, and correct insetting of the skin. Dr. Virden prefers to place his incisions behind the tragus, the bump in front of the ear, so that they are inconspicuous. It is very important to inset the earlobes so that they hang naturally. The sideburn should not be elevated – a key tipoff to a poorly performed facelift. Lastly the posterior hairline should not be jagged or have a step off so patients can wear their hair up without any visible scar.

A facelift is performed on an outpatient basis and generally takes about 3 to 5 hours to perform. Most patients are back to their normal routine in approximately 10 to 21 days.
Immediately after surgery, the face is fitted with very light bandages in order to decrease the recovery time and to reduce swelling. Generally, post-operative instructions call for plenty of rest and limited activity in order to speed up the healing and recovery process. The stitches are normally removed within 1 week. Patients sometimes report some minor pain associated with surgery. Any discomfort can be treated effectively with oral medication.
