Charles P. Virden, MD ~ Cosmetic Surgery Center ~ REDUCTION MAMMOPLASTY (Breast Reduction) Breast reduction, technically known as “Reduction Mammoplasty” is a surgical procedure that removes both skin and tissue making the breast smaller, firmer and higher. Of all the plastic surgical procedures, breast reduction results in both a noticeable improvement in appearance but also in function. Many of our patients with large breast (macromastia or gigantomastia) complain of neck pain, back pain, bra strap cuts, and/or intertrigenous rashes. A well- performed breast reduction can eliminate all of these symptoms and result in a much more beautiful appearing breast.
General Procedure Techniques for breast reduction vary; however, the most common procedure involves an incision that circles the areola. From the areola, the incision goes down and follows the natural curve under the breast. The surgeon then removes excess glandular tissue, fat, and skin. Next, the nipple and areola are repositioned to a higher position and held in place by stitches. Occasionally, liposuction alone can be used to reduce breast size. Dr. Virden utilizes a superior pedicle approach in the majority of his breast reductions. This technique results in less scars than the traditional inferior pedicle breast reduction, and the breasts are much less prone to bottoming out (drooping of the bottom part of the breast.) The procedure is performed by making an incision around the areola extending downward following the natural curve beneath the breast. Excess tissue, skin and fat are removed and the nipple and areola are lifted. The best procedure can be determined during your initial consultation visit.
