Charles P. Virden, MD ~ Cosmetic Surgery Center ~ REDUCTIVE AUGMENTATION The term “reductive augmentation” may seem to be counterintuitive. This procedure was developed by Dr. Virden to improve the appearance and result after breast reduction. It’s applied to the situation in which a breast reduction is performed in conjunction with breast augmentation in which extra tissue is removed so the volume can be replaced by an implant. This results in a smaller breast with better and longer lasting superior pole fullness. Historically, most types of breast reduction procedures are prone to bottoming out and lack superior pole fullness. Additional native breast tissue is removed, and this is replaced with a silicone breast implant. In those patients who desire a smaller breast and also want superior pole fullness (an overall rounder breast), a reductive augmentation will provide a more aesthetically pleasing result. The reductive augmentation procedure takes approximately four hours and is performed on an outpatient basis. Most patients are up and about within three to four days after surgery.
